Basic Background Info
By the time he was nine, Vinny Appice knew that he wanted to be a rock drummer. The revelation came when he first saw his older brother, Carmine, play a live show as the drummer in Vanilla Fudge. Seven years later, Vinny began to realize his dream. Vinny Appice played in numerous bands and practiced at The Record Plant studio . In a fantastic case of serendipity, he and his band performed hand claps for the John Lennon recording "Whatever Gets You Through the Night". Lennon used Vinny’s skills on many more projects.
Vinny Appice's first gig in a big name band was with Derringer. After a couple years with Derringer, he left to join Axis. When Black Sabbath called Vinny, he quickly left Axis to join the legendary heavy metal band.
However, Vinny Appice left Black Sabbath with frontman Ronnie James Dio and they created Dio. After an amazing decade-spanning career, Vinny Appice left Dio to work on other projects. But after only a couple of years on his own, Black Sabbath asked Vinny to join them for a reunion performance. Ronnie James Dio was in on the project and Vinny Appice agreed to join them for one album. Appice and Dio reignited their creative spark, and they recorded three more albums together over the next six years. Afterwards, Vinny Appice returned to Black Sabbath without Ronnie James Dio to drum behind Ozzy Osbourne.
More recently, Vinny Appice started working on a new band called 3 Legged Dogg with bassist Jimmy Bain (Dio, Rainbow), guitarist Carlos Cavazo (Quiet Riot), guitarist Brian Young (David Lee Roth), and singer Chas West. Even more recently he worked with Heaven & Hell, a new band comprised of Appice, Ronnie James Dio, and Black Sabbath members Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler. His involvement with Heaven & Hell marks the third time he replaced Bill Ward and the fourth time he has replaced a Black Sabbath drummer.
