Biography

Millions of Americans have seen Teddy Campbell perform in the house band for reality-television-sensation American Idol, led by Ricky Minor.

Teddy Campbell started playing makeshift drums around the house as a small child. Gospel church audiences in Chicago first listened to Teddy Campbell on the drums when he was just four years old. Regardless of his impressive professional experience, Teddy Campbell believes that playing in the church band was the best education. Until Teddy Campbell was fourteen, he only listened to Gospel music. After that, he started listening to Vinnie Colaiuta, Dave Weckl, Will Kennedy, Steve Gadd, Marvin Gaye, Parliament, and Earth, Wind & Fire.

Teddy Campbell relocated to California in his twenties and immediately settled into the Los Angeles music scene. In their popular heyday, both Britney Spears and 98 Degrees invited Teddy Campbell to serve as their musical director and drummer. Teddy Campbell also served as musical director for Deborah Cox, Kelly Price, Mary Mary, and Ann Nesby. Teddy Campbell's recording credits include Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, Rod Stewart, Al Jarreau, Kirk Whalum, and Kelly Clarkson. He has also toured with The Backstreet Boys, Christina Aguilera, Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, LSG (Gerald Levert, Keith Sweat, Johnny Gill), Queen Latifah, and Bette Midler.

In addition, Teddy Campbell has frequently performed at a host of awards ceremonies, including The Image Awards, The Essence Awards, The Billboard Awards, BET Awards, and BET's Celebration Of Gospel, as well as the VH1 Disco Ball, VH1 Diva's Concert, and the VH1 Save The Music Concert.

Having regularly performed with American Idol musical director Rickey Minor on various television shows, Rickey recommended Teddy for America Idolís house band. Teddy Campbell performs reading charts and the requirements for a live televised performance are often strict.

Teddy Campbell also performs with his own Gospel group, The Soul Seekers. In an interesting twist, Teddy Campbell is the lead singer and Eric Seats is the drummer. Occasionally, drummer and producer Nisan Stewart joins Teddy Campbell singing for the group. In 2006, The Soul Seekers won Gospel musicís highest accolade: the Stellar Award for the Quartet Group of the Year.

  • Teddy on learning to play in a Gospel church band: "Because not only does your pocket get strong in that setting, your awareness of what's going on around you improves, because you have to pay attention to so many things in church. You've got to watch the director. You've got to listen to the music, support the band and singers, and watch the preacher. It's not just showing up and playing. You have to be very attentive. And spiritually too, you've got to be in tune with what's happening. If the spirit is trying to move to a worship mode or to more praise and aggressive music, you've got to be able to switch over."
