The son of a CIA officer, Stewart Copeland was born in Alexandria, Virginia, but he grew up in the Middle East. Stewart Copeland took drum lessons when he was twelve and the following year he played at his school dances in Beirut, Lebanon. After studying in England for two years, Stewart Copeland retuned to the U.S. and studied at both California Western University and University of California, Berkeley.

In 1975 Stewart Copeland returned to England and played drums for progressive rock band Curved Air and met his future wife, the band's vocalist Sonja Kristina. They married in 1982 and later had two sons, Jordan and Scott.

After playing with Curved Air for two years, Stewart Copeland created the Police with sophisticated singer and bassist Sting and classic punk guitarist Henry Padovani in 1977. Andy Summers quickly replaced Padovani. With a lot of help from Stewart's brothers Miles and Ian, the Police created a place for themselves in music history. Their third album, Zenyatta Mondatta, released in 1980, solidified their position as a top rock band of the time. Drummers and critics respected Stewart Copeland's original style.

However, Sting, Stewart, and Andy decided to part ways in 1984 to challenge themselves to grow as musicians. Stewart Copeland embarked on a long and respected career as a soundtrack composer and studio musician. In fact, he received in Golden Globe nomination in 1983 for his musical score in Francis Ford Coppola's Rumble Fish. Stewart Copeland composed for various movies, including Talk Radio, Wall Street, 'Riff Raff, 'Raining Stones, Surviving the Game, See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Highlander II: The Quickening, The Leopard Son, She's Having a Baby, Taking Care of Business, West Beirut, and I Am David. He also worked on television shows The Equalizer, Dead Like Me, and Star Wars: Droids, in addition to video games, operas, and ballets.

Stewart Copeland released a solo album in 1985, The Rhythmatist, featuring drums and percussion. His second album, The Equalizer & Other Cliff Hangers, featured his soundtrack work.

Stewart Copeland joined jazz bassit Stanley Clarke and singer Deborah Holland in 1989 to create Animal Logic. After one successful release and tour and one not-so-successful release, the band dismantled.

In 2000, Stewart Copeland created Oysterhead with Les Claypool (Primus) and Trey Anastasio (Phish). Five years later, Stewart composed Ochestralli, a live chamber music ensemble and also started Gizmo with avant-garde guitarist David Fiuczynski.

After a reunion performance at the 2007 Grammy Awards, Stewart, Andy Summers, and Sting embarked on a world reunion tour for their thirtieth anniversary as the Police.
