Biography

Only three years old and Rodd Bland was already playing drums. As a young boy, Rodd Bland would set up pots, pans, and anything else available as his own makeshift custom drum kit. Being the son of blues legend Bobby Blue Bland, this came as no surprise. It only explains where Rodd Bland has gotten his passion, talent, and dedication to music. They are his birthright. Early on, Rodd Bland made a habit of following his father to rehearsals and concerts.

After having to replace the battered household items that had become young Rodd Bland's "drum kit," his father purchased him a Slingerland kit.  Rodd Bland began training under John Jab O’ Starks, Harold “Peanie” Portier, and Tony Coleman. By the age of five, Rodd Bland had made his stage debut playing beside Tony Coleman and the Bobby Blue Bland Orchestra. This experience, in addition to professional mentorship at such a young age, gave Rodd the opportunity to perform with such names as Mel Brown, B.B. King, Slash, Bobby Rush, Johnnie Taylor, Dr. John, and Kim Wilson of the Fabulous Thunderbirds.

Rodd Bland has found inspiration from many different artists, including Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, Steve Ferrone, Dave Abbruzzese, Matt Cameron, Matt Sorum, and Mitch Mitchell. Having such a variety of mentors and influences, Rodd Bland developed an eclectic and versatile drumming style. Well-versed in blues, funk, jazz, rock, R&B, hip hop, and even country, Rodd Bland has toured internationally with his father.  Rodd Bland has also played or shared the road with such luminaries as Ray Charles, Babyface, John Lee Hooker, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Van Morrison. Rodd Bland's also been affiliated with the Eugene Gales Real Blues Project, the B.B. King All-Star Band featuring Preston Shannon, James Govan and the Boogie Blues Band, as well other Memphis artists.
