Basic Background Info
Referred to by Modern Drummer magazine as “a man who many consider to be one of the best clinicians on the planet,” Rick Latham began as a self-taught drummer at the age of twelve. Rick Latham's ears guided him to the powerful R&B influences of southern gospel music, as well as hit artists of the time. Rick Latham played club dates all through his late teens around the Carolinas and eastern seaboard. Though Rick Latham understood the technical aspects, Latham’s focus was getting into the groove of drumming. After graduating from Shelby High School in Columbia, South Carolina, Rick Latham moved on to East Carolina University. It was here that he studied percussion (snare drum, timpani, and mallets) with Harold Jones, further cementing his love for the art of drumming and earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in the process.
After his time at ECU, Rick Latham was granted a teaching assistantship and was accepted into the masters program at North Texas University. Here Rick Latham studied with Robert Schietroma, Jim Hall, and Ron Fink. Rick Latham also taught mallets and snare. Along with his busy schedule of drum studies and teaching, Latham performed with the school’s Symphony Orchestra, Wind and Percussion Ensembles, North Texas Lab Bands, and also found time to instruct the NTSU Drum Line.
At the age of twenty-five, Rick Latham published Advanced Funk Studies, an instructional book and CD combo focusing on the technique and insight of playing funk and was honored by Modern Drummer magazine among "The 25 Greatest Drum Books Ever Published" The release and followed success of this publication helped bring Latham into the spotlight, along with his talent and drive.
Rick Latham's whirlwind career has lead him to perform both live and on recordings with such greats as bluesman B.B. King, Quincy Jones, Neal Schon, Pat Travers, Bill Watrous, Larry Carlton, Paul Smith, Howard Roberts, David Friedman, and David Samuels. Rick's versatility has also been highlighted with such top entertainers as Rita Moreno, Ben Vereen, Martha Reeves, Redd Foxx and Pete Barbutti. Rick Latham has toured throughout the U.S., Canada, South America, Europe, and Asia.
Rick Latham relocated from Dallas, Texas, to Los Angeles, California, in 1984 and has continued to be active in his musical pursuits. Rick Latham often conducts product demonstrations at international trade conventions such as NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants), PASIC (Percussive Arts Society International Convention), and Europe's Music Messe. Rick also conducts clinics and master-classes around the world.
In addition to performing, recording, composing, and producing, Rick Latham fuels his passion for music and performing arts education by involving himself in the evolution of new music and media technology. Finally, in addition to all of his many main projects and side projects, Rick Latham somehow has found time to step into the spotlight himself by fronting his acclaimed jazz group, Rick Latham and the Groove Doctors.
