Quite the mischievous child, Richie Hayward ran away from school on the first day of kindergarten class, even though he actually enjoyed school. Richie Hayward's family then moved to Ames, Iowa, when Richie was six years old.

While watching a Count Basie perfomance on television, Sonny Payne's drumming struck a chord with Richie and inspired him to become a drummer. Ten-year-old Richie insisted on becoming a drummer and begged for a real set of drums to replace his make-shift orange crate set. Drumming came naturally to Richie and within three years he played his first gig on New Years Eve at the Moose Lodge in Nevada, Iowa.

After discovering rock and roll during his early performances,Richie Hayward auditioned for Lowell George's Los Angeles band The Factory. Richie Hayward landed the gig and played with The Factory for two years until it disbanded. Richie Hayward and several other former members of The Factory then evolved into the band The Fraternity of Men. After a short tenure with The Fraternity of Men, Richie Hayward, Lowell George, Bill Payne, and Roy Estrada created Little Feat in 1969 at the suggestion of Frank Zappa. Their organic roots-rock style, blended with blues, country, jazz, rockabily, and eclectic lyrics gained them success, recognition, and a record deal with Warner Brothers.

Little Feat reached a low point in 1979 when Lowell George suffered an unfortunate heart attack at the age of thirty-four. Though they released an album of rarities and live recordings in 1981, the band went on hiatus for several years.

After a jam session in 1986, Little Feat decided to reunite. They released an album in 1988 with new members Craig Fuller and Fred Tackett, and they reignited the flame in their old fans and gained new followers. Little Feat has been very successful since and still plays today. They have released several successful albums, including a complete retrospective by Rhino/Warner Brothers in 2000.

Richie Hayward found much success since his early days playing on orange crates. He has worked and played with many artists, including Joan Armatrading, Kim Carnes, Eric Clapton, Ry Cooder, James Cotton, The Doobie Brothers, Bob Dylan, Peter Frampton, Buddy Guy, Arlo Guthrie, Jonny Lang, Nils Lofgren, Taj Mahal, Robert Palmer, Van Dyke Parks, Robert Plant, Bob Seger, Carly Simon, Stephen Stills, Tom Waits, John Cale, Warren Zevon, Helen Watson, and more.
He passed away August 12, 2010 after treatment for liver cancer.
