Mitch Mitchell, born John Mitchell in England, is best known as the beats behind The Jimi Hendrix Experience. However, prior to working with Hendrix, Mitch Mitchell was an accomplished touring and session musician who worked with Georgie Fame and the Blue Fames, Johnny Harris and the Shades, The Pretty Things, and The Riot Squad.

Nonetheless, a call to work with Jimi Hendrix was the turning point of Mitch Mitchell’s musical career. Mitchell (whose influences were jazz greats like Elvin Jones, Max Roach, and Joe Morello) broke new ground with his drumming style. Rather than melt into the background as a mere timekeeper for the rest of the band, Mitch Mitchell’s style turned the drums into a leading instrument.  Coupled with Hendrix’s earth-shattering guitar reinvention and songwriting, The Jimi Hendrix Experience revolutionized rock music. Mitch Mitchell played with Jimi’s trio from 1966 to 1969 (including at the legendary Woodstock performance) and again in 1970.

In 1968, Mitch Mitchell also played with The Dirty Mac, a band created for The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus, with John Lennon, Eric Clapton, and Keith Richards.

After Jimi Hendrix’s death in 1970, Mitch Mitchell worked to complete production on several incomplete Hendrix recordings, released posthumously. Mitch Mitchell never again achieved musical synergy like he did with Hendrix. Maintaining a low profile, he dabbled in performances and recordings. Mitch Mitchell played with Jack Bruce, Junior Borwn, Bruce Cameron, Randy Hansen, The Gypsy Sun Experience, and April Lawton and Mike Pinera in Ramatam.

Mitch Mitchell passed away in his sleep November 12, 2008 in a hotel room in Portland, Oregon.

  • Mitch never received very much money after Hendrix’s death for their work together and, at one point, was forced to sell one of Hendrix’s guitars for income. Allegedly, he also sold his legal claim to future royalties for a minimal sum.
  • Mitch auditioned for Paul McCartney’s band Wings.
  • He was a child actor on British television.
