Biography

Growing up in the birthplace of jazz, Johnny Vidacovich began playing the drums at the age of ten. Within a couple years, Johnny Vidacovich joined all-kids jazz band called Dunc's Honky Tonks. Local musician Warren Duncan organized the band, taught the kids Dixieland songs, and helped them perform at hospitals and schools. The older kids introduced Johnny Vidacovich to rock and roll and taught him to play rock and funk.

Johnny Vidacovich's childhood passion for rock and funk drumming contunued for years. Johnny played throughout New Orleans with Johnny Adams, Professor Longhair, Mose Allison, and later Harry Connick, Sr., Clarence Johnson III, and his own band Astral Project. He became a prominent and sought-after drummer, known for his sensitivity to the ever-changing world of jazz. In one set, he could mix things up by combining the sounds of reggae, street beat, blues, and bebop, morphing with ease and fluidity.

Johnny Vidacovich's discography numbers nearly one hundred credits, but he is best known as a member of the contemporary jazz group Astral Project with James Singleton, Tony Dagradi, and Steve Masakowski. The jazz/rock/funk band has been jamming since the 1970s.

In 1992 Johnny Vidacovich joined the faculty at Loyola University School of Music, and he has inspired youthful musicians there since then.

Vidacovich's natural talent and abilities have been recognized by the Big Easy Entertainment Awards, and he received praise from Offbeat, Downbeat, the New York Times, and NPR's Jazz Profiles by Branford Marsalis.
