Biography

Born and raised in Gardena, California, Joey Castillo did not start drumming until the age of fifteen. Joey Castillo's favorite artists War, Led Zeppelin, Al Green, and Black Flag, inspired him to start drumming. Joey Castillo taught himself to drum without any formal instruction by watching drummers carefully and attempting to match their energy. Joey Castillo was particularly inspired by the freedom of punk drummers.

In 1984 Joey Castillo got his first major drumming stint with Wasted Youth, a Los Angeles based punk-rock band. During his tenure with Wasted Youth, Joey Castillo and the band released two albums, Get Out of My Yard and Black Daze. Joey Castillo also toured with Wasted Youth. Joey Castillo left Wasted Youth after seven years to join Sugartooth.

After a short tenure with Sugartooth, Joey Castillo joined Danzig. With Danzig, Joey Castillo recorded four albums and performed on multiple tours. In addition to touring with Danzig, Joey Castillo also played for the Japanese band Zilch and toured with them. In 2002 Joey Castillo joined the band Queens of the Stone Age without an audition and began touring the following day.

Joey Castillo is currently playing for the Queens of the Stone Age. He has recorded three albums with them, most recently Era Vulgaris in 2007.

Noise

  • Castillo played not even half a song as an audition for Queens of the Stone Age before bandleader Josh Homme walked out of the room, and came back saying that he fired the drummer and that Castillo was hired. They began touring the next day.
  • Is considered a very unique drummer for his unusual sounds. He has added new instruments and items to his drum kit in order to create the unique and free sound that he is famous for playing.
  • Has credited much of his successful to the early 80s punk rock bands such as Black Flag. As a teenager, Joey would go to concerts and carefully watch the drummers and attempted to recreate their intensity.
  • In 1994, Castillo formed a short-lived band called Chronic Halitosis with future Danzig members. Although the band didn't work out, this band would convince Castillo into joining Danzig.
