Born James Owen Sullivan in February 1981, he is now known as “The Rev,” which is an abbreviation for “The Reverend Tholomew Plague.” The Rev was the drummer for post-hardcore metal band Avenged Sevenfold (A7X).

The Rev and AX7 singer M. Shadows attended a Catholic elementary school together for a short time. As a teenager, The Rev spent a lot of time on his own and even lived in a laundromat for a while.

As a member of Avenged Sevenfold, The Rev played drums and, normally, screams back-up vocals. On the track “Critical Acclaim” from their most recent self-titled album, The Rev actually sang the chorus.  He also had several writing credits on the album.

The Rev, along with fellow Avenged Seven Fold member Synyster Gates, had an experimental metal band side-project called Pinkly Smooth. Within that band, James was known by the moniker “Rat Head.”  He was Pinkly Smooth’s drummer, pianist, and vocalist.
On December 28, 2009, James Sullivan aka 'The Rev' passed away due to a drug overdose.
