Biography

Coady Willis is currently the drummer for The Melvins and Big Business. Previously, Coady Willis was the drummer for the Seattle, Washington, based garage rock band Murder City Devils, who disbanded in 2001. Big Business, also based in Seattle, was a sludge/metal band with a bombastic sound featuring low end attacks by Coady on the drums and  Jared Warren’s unique vocal signature. Big Business released their first album, Head for the Shallow, in early 2005. The following year, Coady and Jared relocated to Los Angeles and joined The Melvins.

The Melvins’ permanent drummer, Dale Crover, said, “He's left-handed, so we want to do this 'mirror image' type of thing. We've kind of fused our two drum sets together, and we're going to try and do some crazy thing with it. We're sharing these big toms in between us.”

As members of the Melvins, Coady Willis and Jared Warren recorded the album, Senile Animal. During the tour supporting the album, Coady and Jared opened the shows performing as Big Business, and then joined The Melvins during the headlining act.

In 2007, Big Business released the critically acclaimed Here Come the Waterworks. Consequently, Tool invited Big Business to open for them on their summer Tour. Guitarist Toshi Kasai joined Coady and Jared on this tour and, in the spring of 2008, Big Business formally invited Toshi to join the band. Coady, Jared, and Toshi plan to record their next album during the summer of 2008.

After returning from touring with Tool, Coady Willis and Jared Warren started recording the new Melvins album, Nude With Boots. The Melvins released the album on July 8, 2008.

  • The Melvins are mentioned twice in the movie Juno. Jason Bateman's character, Mark Loring, played in a band that opened for the Melvins and Juno MacGuff said to him, "You're quite the sellout, Mark. I mean, what would the Melvins say?"
  • Coady Willis appeared in an undergound cult movie called The Edge of Quarrel with folk rocker Rocky Votolato. Coady’s character is hospitalized within the opening scenes of the film, where local Seattle straight-edge kids brutally beat him for his punk leanings. Other members of Murder City Devils also star in the movie.
