Chad Smith's drumming is the foundation behind superband Red Hot Chili Peppers. Chad Smith skillfully merges punk rock with funk groove beats into a melodic beat that provides the foundation of the Chili Peppers sound.

Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, Chad Smith grew up in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. As a teenager, Chad Smith ran away from home and his mother sent him to boarding school upon his return. After graduating from Lahser High School in 1980, Chad Smith held various jobs while playing in several bands including Tilt, Tyrant, Terence, E-Train, and Toby Redd. With Toby Red, Chad Smith recorded an album and supported Kansas on tour.

In the early 1980s, Chad Smith moved to Los Angeles. When Jack Irons left Red Hot Chili Peppers in 1988 (after former guitarist Hillel Slovak died from a drug overdose), Chad Smith auditioned for the position. Impressed with his funky, groove drum style, the band invited him to join.

Chad Smith's first album with the Chili Peppers, Mother's Milk in 1989, was a sleeper hit. The next album, Blood Sugar Sex Magik was also very successful after its release in 1991, selling 7 million copies in the U.S. The following album, One Hot Minute, was only mildly popular, a result of some personnel changes and lack of cohesion within the band. After refocusing and directing themselves, the Red Hot Chili Peppers' 1999 album Californication soared to the tops of charts. This recovery established the band's position as a top alternative rock band. During that same year, Chad wore a giant light bulb on his head at Woodstock and dressed in a doctor costume for Modern Drummer's cover. For these antics and more, Chad is known for his huge personality among fans and drummers.

After 2000, the Chili Peppers toured with Foo Fighters and Pearl Jam. They returned to the studio in 2001 and recorded By the Way. After that release, they compiled a Greatest Hits album in 2003 and in 2006 recorded all-new Stadium Arcadium.

In addition to working with the Chili Peppers, Chad Smith keeps busy with side projects. Chad Smith created Chickenfoot with Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony (both of Van Halen). And in late 2007, his new group, the Bombastic Meatbats, with Jeff Kollman (Cosmosquad), Kevin Chown, and Ed Roth, recorded its first album, slated for release in 2008.

Chad Smith also excels as an instructor and expansively toured the world offering drum clinics. Chad Smith was honored to offer a series of clinics with one of his inspirations, Ian Paice of Deep Purple, and also with the legendary Steve White.
