Basic Background Info
Native Alabaman Carla Azar is well-versed in many instruments, including drums, glockenspiel, xylophone, Mellotron, piano, and bass guitar.
Carla Azar was a member of a Los Angeles based band Ednaswap for the band's first two albums. Ednaswap saw most of their popularity from vicarious sources. They gained attention indirectly as their songs were covered by other artists such as Sinéad O'Connor and Natalie Imbruglia. Azar was replaced on drums by Scot Coogan, shortly before the band split.
The musicians that would become the members of the band Autolux met Carla Azar while Ednaswap was touring with Failure and Local H. Carla Azar and Eugene Goreshter had met while scoring Nobel Prize winner Dario Fo's play, Accidental Death of an Anarchist. Autolux debuted in 2000, playing two shows at Silverlake Lounge in Los Angeles. A year later, Autolux released the self-produced Demonstration EP. Recorded on an 8-track, the EP contained only five songs. The band impressed the influential music producer T-Bone Burnett at a performance. Burnett got them signed to a small label, DMZ, which was founded by the Coen Brothers. Autolux was the label’s first band ever.
In May 2002, while Autolux was opening for Elvis Costello, Carla Azar fell from the stage while performing and shattered her elbow. Medically, things looked dim for the future of her drumming, but she was able to return to her instrument of choice after an experimental surgery (which involved eight titanium screws and a bone graft from her hip). After Carla Azar's recovery, Autolux began recording their first full-length album, Future Perfect, in November 2002.
In 2002, Carla Azar and Josh Klinghoffer played with Vincent Gallo as his tour band. Carla Azar played not only the drums, but also guitar and Mellotron on the tour.
Throughout 2005, Carla Azar toured with Autolux as they played with a number of bands, including The White Stripes, Shellac, Beck, and Clinic. Then, they were invited by Trent Reznor to open for Nine Inch Nails for the With Teeth tour. Evidently, Reznor had been playing Autolux albums as people were arriving to the venue before the Nine Inch Nails shows. As Autolux was introduced to a much wider audience, it brought the band a greater popularity and many new opportunities. In 2006, Autolux played for the late night television show Jimmy Kimmel Live.
