Basic Background Info
Benjamin Byrne began playing the drums at the age of ten. Benjamin Byrne got his first drum kit from his brother's friend, who was selling his little four piece kit. At that time, he listened to Iron Maiden, Queen, Roger Taylor, and Ringo Starr.
In the late 1990s, Benjamin Byrne was playing with bassist James Stelfox. With the addition of James Walsh and Barry Westhead, they formed the band Waterface. They later changed the name to Starsailor, after the 1970 Tim Buckley album. Great reviews and a growing fan base gained the band notoriety, and they signed with EMI in 2000.
They sold out their first U.K. tour in 2001. Starsailor released their first album, Love is Here, the same year, and it reached #2 on the U.K. charts. They recorded their second album, Silence is Easy, in Los Angeles with the help of Phil Spector after Spectorís daughter Nicole saw the band on their U.S. 2002 tour and told her father about them.
Starsailor's third album, On the Outside, was heavier and more aggressive than their earlier releases. Completed in March 2008, they released their fourth album in September 2008.
